Packing fragile items can be difficult because, if it’s not done correctly, they’re at risk of breaking. With the right tools and moving supplies, you can transport these valuable items safely from your old house to the new one.

4 Tips for Packing Breakable Objects

1. Double Wrap

Grab the correct moving supplies first. Purchase sturdy cardboard boxes in multiple sizes so more of your stuff can fit in them. A fragile item should first be wrapped with two layers of cushioning material and covered with packing paper around the sides. If there’s less space in the box, the items won’t knock and rattle.

2. Pack Light

When packing a large box, place the heavier items on the bottom, so lighter, more valuable pieces don’t get crushed. Electronics, like a Blu-ray™ player or a PlayStation®, can’t handle a lot of weight on top of them, despite their size. As an alternative, place books or something easily stackable as a base, then put the fragile items on top.

3. Space On-Top

moving suppliesDon’t leave space in between valuable glass or dinnerware because they’re more likely to smash; however, leaving a 2-inch gap at the top, or lining it with a blanket, will protect your items if another box is stacked above it. Sometimes, stacking multiple boxes of valuable items on top of each other can’t be avoided. Prepare in advance in case this happens.

4. Label Boxes

Label your moving supplies, including boxes and storage bins, with fragile over the top and sides in visible red ink. You may not be there to tell the moving company which bin is fragile during the day of the move. Labeling will let the movers know immediately which boxes should be handled with care.
