Your lawn uses plenty of nutrients throughout the year. To replenish them, you need to apply lawn fertilizer regularly. But incorrect application can damage the grass, leading to a pale and sickly lawn. To get the perfect green growth, you need a schedule. Here’s what you should know.

First Feed of the Year

In the spring, grass shoots up quickly, so it needs plenty of nutrients to support this growth and help it recover from winter. As a general rule of thumb, apply the year's first round of fertilizer when the soil temperature hits 55 degrees.

Lawn FertilizerIn Nebraska, this means early to mid April. At this time, apply a nitrogen-rich fertilizer. Nitrogen is one of the most important components of all plant tissue above ground level, so grass runs through a lot of it as it grows and gets cut. It's also a major component of chlorophyll, so grass short on nitrogen will look yellow and unhealthy.

Continued Feeding

Your lawn maintenance schedule should include about five fertilizer applications a year, continuing into October. The second feed should be about four weeks after the first, before switching to a six-to-eight-week schedule for the next few applications. Make sure at least one of your lawn fertilizer applications uses an organic fertilizer such as manure.

Organic options contain micronutrients that your grass needs, along with the macronutrients nitrogen, potassium, and phosphorus. Use a nitrogen-heavy fertilizer throughout the spring and summer; in the fall, switch to lawn fertilizers high in phosphorus and potassium. This is the season when plants focus on root growth, and these nutrients help make healthy roots.
