People move cross-country for a variety of reasons—to explore a new career opportunity, be closer to loved ones, or to satisfy a sense of adventure. However, just because you are looking forward to the changes to come doesn’t mean that the process isn’t also stressful. The following moving guide offers tips for making this transition smoother.

Timeline for Cross-Country Moving

Two or Three Months Beforehand

If you are moving during peak relocation season—between May and September—book your movers as soon as possible. Find a company with a good reputation and that will provide a written quote.

If your children will be transferring schools, call about the enrollment process.

Gather all of your important documents such as passports, medical records, birth certificates, financial records, insurance cards, and more. Keep them in one secure place so they won’t get lost in the shuffle.

Start organizing the house, getting rid of items that you want to sell or donate. It may also be worthwhile to rent a dumpster for a few weeks.

One Month Beforehand

Arrange for any utility changes. If you will arrive at your new house early in the day on moving day, arrange to have the electricity turned on the day before. This way, you won’t arrive to a dark and uncomfortable house.

Start packing possessions you don’t need to use in the next month and arrange for a storage unit if necessary.

movingNotify all important institutions of your address change. This includes your bank, insurance companies, credit card providers, medical providers, and USPS. Cancel memberships and subscriptions that are area-specific, such as your gym membership.

One or Two Weeks Beforehand

In the weeks just before moving day, you should start packing up items that are inconvenient to be without. By the day before the move, everything should be completely packed save for an overnight bag for each member of the family. Moving is stressful for kids and pets, so leave some toys and bedding out that will be comforting to them.

If you’re driving to your new home, have your vehicles inspected and the oil changed. Clean the home or schedule a cleaner to come in and do it for you after you’re gone. Arrange for someone to meet with your professional movers on the big day to provide them with an inventory, directions, and sign paperwork.
