You probably have heard many Bible stories during sermons at church, at Sunday school, or through movies, television, and books. If you’ve been meaning to rejuvenate your own personal Bible study, take a look at books of the Bible you should start with first.

Which Books Should I Read First in My Bible Study?

1. Genesis

Genesis is the first book of the Bible. It includes some of the most famous stories, ones that you remember from preschool or Sunday school: The Creation, Adam and Eve, Noah’s Ark, and Abraham. However, Genesis essentially helps us understand God and his relationship with man. Rereading this book can give you a fresh perspective on stories you’re already familiar with.

2. Psalms

Whether you’re seeking comfort, feeling lost, grieving, joyful, or thankful, there’s a Psalm in which you can find support.

3. Romans

The Epistle to the Romans or Letter to the Romans, often shortened to “Romans,” was written by the apostle Paul to explain that salvation is offered through the Gospel. Romans includes all the main themes of the Bible: faith, grace, God, judgment, the nature of the church, and more.

4. Matthew

The Gospels include the books of Matthew, Mark, Luke, and John. While they all tell stories about Jesus, the Gospel of Matthew is considered to be the first recorded and is the longest of the four. The Gospel of Matthew was written to a Jewish audience and covers the prophecies Jesus fulfills. Famous passages include the Sermon on the Mount and the Great Commission.
