Odorless and undetectable to the naked eye, carbon monoxide is a highly dangerous gas produced by the incomplete combustion of fuel sources, such as gasoline, wood, propane, and charcoal. Improper installation or a lack of ventilation can cause fuel-burning appliances to back up, leaching the toxic gas into your home and potentially causing health issues. While CO detectors are crucial, they're not always perfect. Here’s how to tell if you have a problem and what you can do to prevent leaks.

Signs of a Carbon Monoxide Leak

Known as the silent killer, CO typically goes undetected, building up in your home. If you experience a dull headache, weakness or fatigue, dizziness, or shortness of breath, it may indicate the presence of carbon monoxide.

carbon monoxideWhile it’s imperceptible, there are signs you can look for to help you spot a potential leak, including dripping or condensation on the windows near fuel-burning appliances; yellow, brown, or sooty stains around a potentially leaking appliance; or a lack of an upward draft in your chimney flue. Also, pay close attention to the burn rate of solid-fuel fires in your home. If you notice they're burning slower than usual, it can indicate the presence of carbon monoxide.

Preventing CO Leaks

One of the easiest ways to prevent a potentially life-threatening leak is by installing a battery-operated carbon monoxide (CO) detector that will alert you if CO levels in your home increase to an unsafe volume.

Also, place generators as far from your home and nearby dwellings as possible. Never leave your car running in the garage or enclosed spaces, as CO can accumulate, even when the door is open. Additionally, avoid using your gas oven to heat your home, and ensure that any fuel-burning space heaters have adequate ventilation. Finally, never use gasoline or charcoal-burning grills, generators, or stoves that are intended for outdoor use inside.
