Every dog owner wants their companion to be happy and comfortable, but some conditions are subtle and hard to spot. Hematomas are common issues that occur without warning. If your pet develops one, they’ll need to see a veterinarian. The guide below explains everything pet owners need to know about hematomas and treatment.

A Dog Care Guide to Hematomas

What Are Hematomas?

Hematomas are blisters that form when blood vessels burst. Most often, they occur under the skin in the flap of a dog’s ear, but they can be found on other parts of the body or in internal organs as well. They typically develop as the result of irritation within the ear. For example, dogs with ear infections will often shake their heads roughly, repeatedly slapping their ears and causing hematomas. Less common causes include skin allergies and blood clotting abnormalities.

What Are the Symptoms?

dog careWhen located under the skin, hematomas should be relatively easy to find. If your dog seems to shrink away from ear petting or has been scratching and shaking their head frequently, look for swelling and discoloration along the ear flap. Hematomas are painful, so your dog will likely show some sensitivity in the affected area.

Internal hematomas are more serious and may lead to organ failure depending on their location. Although symptoms may not occur at all, some signs include pain, incontinence, and seizures.

How Are Hematomas Treated?

There are many ways these blisters can be treated. Your veterinarian may drain the hematoma; for more severe cases, or those that are internal, they will provide anesthesia.

To prevent fluid from building up again, they will either place a drain on the ear or suture the ear flap. If there is another underlying cause, such as an injury or mites, that condition will need to be treated as well to ensure no more blisters will form.
