Mold is a fungus that grows primarily in moist, dark places. Without prompt mold removal services, an infestation can cause any number of health problems, from congestion and allergy flareups to respiratory illnesses and neurological issues. Thus, it is important to take steps to prevent mold. To get started, consider some of the common causes of growth.

What Causes Mold Growth?

1. Humidity

Too much moisture in the air is a leading cause of mold growth. Everyday tasks like cooking, washing clothes and dishes, and showering can all cause humidity levels to rise.

To combat these issues, always use exhaust fans when cooking and showering or bathing; crack a few windows, even just a small amount, for an hour or so each day; and invest in a dehumidifier to help draw moisture out of the air.

2. Leaking Pipes

In some cases, you'll know right away if you have a leaking pipe; the influx of water will be unmistakable. But other times, leaks can be harder to spot. A loose-fitting or a small crack in a pipe can cause water to slowly drip, and the damage might take time before it is readily visible. As the water drips inside walls, under floors and sinks, or above ceilings, it creates the dark, wet environment ideal for mold growth.

To prevent the need for mold removal services, check for signs of water damage regularly—like dark spots on walls, ceilings, and floors and a damp, musty smell—and inspect the flow of water out of the taps and look for noticeable slowing.

3. Poor Ventilation

Healthy airflow reduces humidity, and proper ventilation is key. Many attics have vents to help keep the home temperate and reduce moisture, so if your home has them, check to ensure they are clean and clear. Also, clothes dryers often have vents that direct hot-air output to the outside; make sure that these vents are clean and clear, as well. If you don't have exhaust fans in your kitchen, bathrooms, and laundry room, install them.
