Self-care is the act of taking care of one’s physical, mental, and emotional health. While this form of self-love is important for people of all ages, it’s especially essential for seniors. As you age, it can become more difficult to make time for yourself. However, it can be easier than you think when you incorporate these four tips into your regular health care routine.

How Seniors Can Practice Self-Care

1. Eat Healthily

Make an effort to have nourishing meals that will help you feel your best. When you cook, make varied meals using whole, unprocessed foods and plenty of vegetables. While eating healthy supports your body, it’s also OK to indulge in the occasional treat.

2. Exercise

3. Make Sleep a Priority

Some seniors experience difficulty sleeping due to the side effects of prescription medications or bodily aches and pains. However, a good night’s rest is essential for your physical and mental health, as it gives your body time to repair itself and your brain time to process memories and information. Talk to your doctor or health care professional if you have prolonged issues with insomnia.

4. Socialize More

Be with loved ones at times other than normal holiday gatherings and special occasions. Schedule a weekly lunch or phone call with a friend or family member. Create variety for your social time by going on walks and enjoying a relaxing time in nature together. This time spent socializing can help you become more resilient to stress, happier, and healthier.
