If you’ve lost many of your natural teeth due to decay or gum disease, you’re likely seeking a solution that provides both aesthetic and functional value. In these cases, your dentist may recommend dentures. If you’re considering this option, the following guide will provide you with the insight needed to move forward with peace of mind.

What Are Dentures Made Of?

Dentures feature metal frameworks that are layered with a resin or acrylic base. The individual teeth adhered to the base are most often created out of composite resin or porcelain—both of which are designed to look like the patient’s natural teeth. Once the teeth have been shaped to suit your mouth, the technician will shade and color the resin to look like natural gum tissue.

Which Kinds of Dentures Are Available?

denturesDentures are available in three basic options: complete, partial and implant supported sets. Complete dentures are meant to fully replace the entire arch of your smile. Partial sets, on the other hand, are designed to hinge on top of your natural teeth to replace one or more missing ones.  Implant supported includes implant snaps to firmly hold the dentures and partials more securely. All options are removable and designed to function and look like your regular teeth. Your dentist will work with you to determine the option that best suits your needs.

How Do You Keep Dentures Clean?

First, always rinse your mouth out after eating or drinking to avoid staining your prosthetics. You should also brush them twice a day to prevent left-behind food debris that could cause discoloration or foul odors. Finally, place your dentures in water overnight to help maintain moisture and prevent drying. Add a bit of effervescent solution to provide a deep clean as well.
