Moving is a chore. Although the outcome—living in a new home or working in a new office—will be pleasant, the process can be stressful, especially when it comes to packing. If you’re looking for tips on packing boxes to make your move as easy as possible, here’s what you should know.

How Can I Make Packing Moving Boxes Easier?

1. Declutter

Before you start filling boxes with all your belongings, designate some for recycling, repurposing, donating, or tossing.

2. Start Early

Don’t procrastinate. Once you have a move-in date, start packing—preferably a few weeks before moving day. Take it step by step. If you tackle one room every few days, you’ll find it easier to keep going and stay organized.

boxes3. Pack Rooms Separately

Box up belongings room-by-room to keep organized when packing and unpacking. Don’t mix the contents from several rooms in one container.

4. Label Clearly

Label carton tops and sides with the name of the room it belongs in, not what the box contains. Labeling boxes by destination, such as kitchen, bedroom, or garage, makes it easier to sort things into place.

5. Pack Heavy Stuff First

To minimize crushing, put heavy stuff into boxes first and lighter items on top. Nest smaller items within larger items whenever possible.

6. Fill In Spaces

To prevent breakable belongings from shifting around during transit, cushion them by filling in empty spaces with towels, clothing, linens, or packing paper.

7. Use Tape to Seal & Reinforce

Last but not least, tape boxes closed. Seal the top and bottom seams with packing tape, and reinforce the edges with tape to prevent the weight of its contents to cause rips or holes.
