One of the most important decisions you’ll make in planning your upcoming relocation is hiring your movers. After all, the team you choose will be responsible for all of your family’s possessions. The right company will get you settled in your new place on time and without a hiccup. Keep the following questions in mind as you screen worthy candidates.

What to Ask Movers Before Hiring Them

What’s your license number?

This is a particularly important detail in the moving industry. A common scam is for a group of people to pretend to be movers with the intention of stealing your belongings and holding them for ransom.

Avoid falling into this trap by asking for their license number, which is issued by either the U.S. Department of Transportation or the state. You can also check their credibility by asking for references and looking at their reviews online.

Are you insured?

Insurance doesn’t just prove that they’re professional; it protects you in case of an incident.  The movers will do everything they can to protect your belongings, but accidents can happen. Ask what type of coverage they have, so you know you’ll be financially protected.

What will my move cost?

moversThey should be willing to provide a guaranteed estimate for your move. This may require them coming into your home to see what you’ll need to move and get the details about where they’re picking up your belongings and dropping them off. Get the estimate in writing so there are no surprises when the bill comes.

Are there additional charges?

There are two types of estimates: binding and non-binding. Binding means you’ll pay the amount they quoted you. Non-binding may be subject to change based on the precise weight of your belongings, the number of stairs involved, travel time, and other unique factors. If your estimate is subject to change, understand the factors that would impact it.
