With the harsh winters, it can be difficult for parents in Boston to find fun activities to do with their kids while they aren’t in day care. Fortunately, with a little planning, you can keep your children entertained while teaching them new skills. Here are a few ideas to try.

A Guide to Children’s Activities for Winter

1. Do a Camp Out in Your Living Room

This is a fun way to teach your kids about camping without having to sit in traffic. Have the whole family sleep in sleeping bags, and if you have the space, build a small fort-tent in your living room. Drag a few chairs together and drape them with a sheet. Next, put pillows on each side to weigh down the tent.

It’s not camping without eating typical camping food. Working together as a family, make hot chocolate, hot dogs, and beans. Eat everything on the floor for some added fun.

2. Play Board Games

Before you begin, read the instructions together so that everyone knows the rules. Even if your kids don’t understand every element of the game, get started anyways and teach them as they go.

3. Go for a Nature Walk

On warmer winter days, bundle up, and take your kids for a stroll in a forest. Make sure they dress in layers; this way, if the weather gets too warm, they could take one off. Also, bring tissues, as the cold can lead to runny noses. If you’ve never taken them on a nature walk before, don’t overwhelm them; keep it to 30 minutes or at most, an hour.
