Around 80 percent of American households have at least one computer. Chances are you’re on your own laptop or desktop right now. But if a move is in your future, you’ll have to pack your computer up. Don’t worry about losing your files or opening the box to find your machine in pieces. With tips from Rochester’s Becker Movers, you’ll move from Point A to Point B with a working computer that you can set up right away!

Here’s what you can do to ensure that your computer works well when you unpack it in your new home:

  • Get It Insured: Make sure that your moving insurance will pay for any damage to your computer. Most moving insurance is based on weight, so make sure the company will pay a satisfying amount per pound. You’ll want the total payout to be enough to at least cover data recovery in the event of a crisis.
  • Back Up Your Files: You should back up your data regularly, but it’s especially important that you do it before a move. Invest in an external hard drive which can hold at least 250 gigabytes of data. This should be enough space to hold your most important files, including music, documents, pictures, and videos.
  • Pack It Properly: If you have the original boxes for your machine and its accessories, utilize them! They have the proper dimensions and packaging to make sure your equipment doesn’t shift during a move. If you don’t have the original boxes, measure the dimensions of your computer, as well as your monitor, printer, and speakers if applicable. Then find boxes and Styrofoam inserts that will fit those measurements and hold your equipment nicely in place.
  • Take Care Of Your Cords: Color code your cords to make sure you remember which goes where. A good tip is to take pictures of your setup to recall how everything was plugged in at your old place. When you arrive at your new home, you’ll be able to set everything up in a snap!
