Whether you want a walkway near a beautiful garden or one leading up to a deck, a cobblestone path can transform your backyard. Choosing the right size and type of landscaping materials is key for installing a level and safe surface. Here are the steps for adding a cobblestone design to your outdoor space.

How to Create a Backyard Cobblestone Path

1. Select Similar-Size Stones

After taking measurements on where the path will be, choose cobblestones that are approximately the same size. This helps ensure a more even walkway. The dimensions generally depend on the length and width of your desired path. Group smaller and medium stones separately in case you need to fill in any gaps.

2. Prepare the Path

To allow ample room to install the cobblestones, dig at least four inches deep. The extra space is for filling in layers of dirt or sand for drainage. Once you level the bottom, put in a thin layer of pea gravel, which is available at most landscaping material stores. This will help create a channel for water runoff. Then, put down a weed barrier cloth and a layer of sand. Tamp down the sand until it is even and firmly packed.

3. Place the Cobblestones

Continue to place the cobblestones until the entire walkway is filled. Then, make adjustments like filling in gaps with medium or smaller stones.

4. Even Out the Path

Once the cobblestones are placed to your satisfaction, use a rubber mallet to securely tap each one into place. Check that the stones are even as you move forward. If necessary, remove some of the sand so that the stones are flush with one another. There may be some uneven spots, but the key is to avoid drastic height fluctuations.

5. Fill Gaps With Mason’s Sand

The final step is filling in the gaps with mason’s sand to ensure that the cobblestones won’t shift. Pack the sand firmly and spray the landscaping material gently with water from a garden hose. The sand should be thoroughly soaked. Allow your new cobblestone path to set for up to 48 hours. If you notice any loose areas or shifting, give the mason’s sand another soak and let it set for 24 hours.
