How to Care for a Bronze Headstone

1. Remove Debris

Gently brush away any leaves, grass, or other debris from the marker’s surface. Use a soft cotton cloth and swabs to extract dirt from the crevices of trim and engravings. Minimize touching bronze directly with your hands since oily skin promotes discoloration.

2. Wash Gently

Lightly wet the marker with a mixture of dish soap and distilled water. Using a soft bristle brush, gently scrub the intricate areas between lettering and around elevated decorations. Then move on to the broad, flat surfaces. Rinse with clean water to flush away the loosened dirt. Check for areas that may need a second scrub and give them another wipe.

3. Dry Carefully

Using a soft flannel cloth, carefully dry the marker with small, light, circular strokes. Make sure to pass the fabric through the smaller channels where water accumulates. When the surface appears dry, allow 15 minutes for it to air-dry before proceeding.

4. Wax

Once the headstone is completely dry, apply an even layer of chemical-free paste wax. Selecting a wax containing UV inhibitors will also help to protect the headstone against sun damage.

Use the same small, circular motions throughout the application. Make sure the wax layer is never thick enough to leave a visible residue. Allow the wax to dry for 20 minutes, then buff with a dry, clean flannel cloth or a shoe brush.  

5. Maintain
