The History of Anointing

The word "anointed" can be traced back to the Latin inungere, in which in means “upon” and -ungere means “to smear with oil.” The Bible references the process of anointing in multiple passages and also refers to anointed individuals, including Jesus. 

This passage from 2 Corinthians 1:21-22 provides insights into the logic underlying the process: “And it is God who establishes us with you in Christ, and has anointed us, and who has also put his seal on us and given us his spirit in our hearts as a guarantee.”

Jesus, anointed through God, empowers Christians to carry on His teachings. Anointment offers Christians strength and protection. The person is thus set apart and designated for divine purposes.
