Spiritual anointing is a process derived from the Holy Scripture. It involves applying oils to the head or body. According to Christian tradition, this is seen as an expression of the sanctifying role of the Holy Spirit. Here’s some important information about this custom.

The History of Anointing

anointingThe word "anointed" can be traced back to the Latin inungere, in which in means “upon” and -ungere means “to smear with oil.” The Bible references the process of anointing in multiple passages and also refers to anointed individuals, including Jesus.

This passage from 2 Corinthians 1:21-22 provides insights into the logic underlying the process: “And it is God who establishes us with you in Christ, and has anointed us, and who has also put his seal on us and given us his spirit in our hearts as a guarantee.”

Jesus, anointed through God, empowers Christians to carry on His teachings. Anointment offers Christians strength and protection. The person is thus set apart and designated for divine purposes.

What Happens During Anointing?

The process of anointing is simple. Special oil is smeared or rubbed on the individual’s body or head in the context of a religious ceremony. When a person is anointed, they are empowered and protected. Anointing gives you strength and will bring you a sense of peace.
