Seasonal and year-long allergies can cause numerous aggravating symptoms, including itchy and watery eyes. Unfortunately, eye allergies are so common that most people don’t even realize these issues can often be treated. If you suspect your discomfort might be caused by allergies, use this eye care guide to relieve and prevent future symptoms.

Do:

Use hypoallergenic bedding.

You spend approximately one-third of your time in bed. If you have allergies, hypoallergenic bedding materials—like memory foam, synthetic polyester, and cotton—will resist dust mites, pollen, mold, and other allergens. This will help you sleep better and reduce the likelihood of itchy, watery eyes the next day.

Clean with dust removal in mind.

eye careDust mites are present year-round and usually affect people the most inside their homes. Minimize your symptoms by dusting weekly with a damp cloth to catch the dust instead of stirring it up into the air. Also, mop floors with a microfiber cloth and go over carpeted areas with a vacuum that uses an allergen filter.

Don’t:

Spend a lot of time outside.

When it’s the peak of pollen or hay-fever season, try to stay indoors as much as possible. Also, prevent allergens from invading your home by keeping all doors and windows closed. Instead, turn on your heating or air conditioning system and make sure the fan setting is on so air circulates throughout your entire home. Maintain the quality of this air by changing your air filter at least once a month.

Wear contact lenses if your eyes are irritated.

While contacts are functional and easy, they can irritate your eyes further during allergy season. This is because allergens are attracted to their soft, spongy texture and will stick to them. Wearing eyeglasses is better for your eye care and blocks pollen and dust from getting in your eyes.
