Welcoming an adorable kitten into your household is exciting. As you get to know your furry friend, educate yourself and your family on how to care for your animal correctly. With this in mind, below is a helpful pet hospital-approved guide to kitten care.

3 Tips for Caring for a New Kitten

1. Animal Vaccinations

When a kitten turns six weeks old, take them to a pet hospital for their first round of vaccinations. During this initial visit, your veterinarian will administer shots to protect your pet against rhinotracheitis, calicivirus, panleukopenia, and chlamydia.

At 12 weeks old, your kitten will require a second round of vaccines for rhinotracheitis, calicivirus, feline leukemia, and panleukopenia. Per your hospital's recommended schedule, a third visit is necessary for another feline leukemia shot and a rabies vaccine. They will also need spay and neuter services by six months old.

2. Socialization

Frequently pet your kitten, introduce them to toys, and familiarize them with their carrier, being in the car, and different floors. Reward positive behavior with praise and treats and invest in scratching posts, so they refrain from scratching furniture.

3. Nutrition

Once your kitten has weaned off milk at six to eight weeks old, they can eat a combination of kibble and wet food. Depending on their age and size, they may need upwards of 4 small meals per day with continual access to water. Talk to your veterinarian for recommendations on portions and high-quality, high protein food brands.
