Skin care is a critical part of your teenager’s daily routine, but if those dry spots aren’t going away with normal care, they may have eczema. An experienced dermatologist will be able to provide a diagnosis and recommend effective treatment, but learning more about the condition will help you and your teen prepare for the appointment. Below is a brief guide about this skin condition.

Causes & Symptoms

Eczema, also known as dermatitis, refers to inflammation of the skin that results in irritation and itchiness. The symptoms and appearance can vary from person to person but can include itchy, rough, dry, flaky, red, dark, or scaly patches of skin. It can be ongoing or happen in episodes called flares and it can occur anywhere on the body.

The cause of eczema isn’t precisely known, but it’s believed to be due to a fault in the immune system or skin allergies. Your teen’s skin may be sensitive to various stimuli—like laundry detergent or makeup—and react with an eczema outbreak. It often doesn’t respond to standard skin care routines.

Treatments

dermatologistThe dermatitis treatment your child’s dermatologist recommends will vary depending upon the severity. Medications to relieve inflammation, itching, and discomfort may be prescribed to counteract the symptoms of the condition.

Topical creams, lotions, and steroids will often be recommended to relieve symptoms through moisturization and anti-inflammatory agents. Antibiotics can battle infections caused by scratching yourself. Wet wraps and light therapies may be used in more severe cases.

The dermatologist should also speak to your teen about their at-home skin care routine, as it will play a large role in the efficacy of treatment. Moisturizers should be used at least twice daily to minimize dry patches, and any products used (like perfumes, body wash, and makeup) should be for sensitive skin and very lightly scented. Short baths and showers, avoiding irritants like rough fabrics, and trying not to sweat will also help manage outbreaks.
