Thanks to your water well pump, you have access to fresh water from deep in the ground. If this equipment freezes, however, cracked components, flooding, and other complications can damage your home. If you suspect that you have this problem, follow these troubleshooting tips.

Do:

Identify the frozen point.

If the pipe is already frozen, you may be able to pinpoint the problem area. Examine the outside of your water pump and pipes for frost. Bulged or distorted lines can also indicate a frozen spot.

Use caution.

Only use an outdoor extension cord with a ground fault circuit interrupter. Avoid blowtorches or other intense, concentrated forms of heat, as these can melt components or cause injury.

Don’t:

Close the faucet.

Frozen pipes are susceptible to bursting due to a buildup of pressure. You can relieve this pressure by leaving the faucet on. You only need to have it slightly open to prevent potentially expensive damage.

Skip insulation.

Once you’ve removed the ice, you must insulate the pipes. If you don’t, the problem might recur. Foam pipe insulation works well. In a pinch, you can use an old blanket or another thick material and secure it in place with heat tape.

As an additional safeguard, leave faucets turned on to a slight drip overnight.
