It’s the season for candy corn, costumes, and childhood joy—that means Halloween is just around the corner! For many kids, dressing up like their favorite characters in search of candy is a highlight of each year. While Halloween can be a wonderful, kid-friendly holiday, there are some important considerations to ensure a happy, healthy evening. To make your Halloween a little safer, Seagull Schools, a trusted preschool and early education center in Honolulu, HI, is here to suggest a few safety tips to make sure your evening both starts and ends happy.

When preparing to head out for the evening, make sure to follow these safety tips:

  • Costume Carefully: On this special spooky night, kids can be whatever they want to be, from pirates to princesses. Without proper planning, however, costumes can be dangerous to kids. Long hems and facemasks can put kids at risk of tripping and falling, and costume props like swords and wands can be dangerous, so be sure to pick items that are soft without any sharp edges.
  • Light The Way: Witches, black cats, and ninjas make for fantastic costumes—but they’re not the safest for walking around the neighborhood. Make your kids’ costumes, especially spooky all-black ensembles, safer with the addition of safety reflectors, and bring along a flashlight to light your path.
  • Check The Candy First: Before the kids dive into their sugary haul, be sure to inspect it carefully first. Any candy that isn’t encased in its original wrapping or seems questionable should be thrown out.
