Manufacturers and HVAC repair companies recommend you change air filters once every 30 to 90 days to prevent accumulated dust and allergens from circulating indoors. However, there are many types of filters and factors to consider. Here's how you can decide which air filter is right for your HVAC system.

MERV Ratings

MERV (or minimum efficiency reporting value) ranks the performance of air filters. The MERV rating for household HVAC systems typically ranges from 1 to 16, with 1 being the least efficient and 16 the best. HVAC air filters with a rating between MERV 16 to 20 are effective in capturing dust, allergens, and other pollutants.

Types of Filters

HVAC repairToday's households mainly use fiberglass, pleated, electrostatic, or HEPA filters. Fiberglass filters, which usually have MERV ratings between 1 and 4, provide maximum airflow but can only trap large particles.

Pleated filters, which have MERV ratings between 5 and 8, are more suitable for people with pets or those who are prone to mild allergies.

If you prefer reusable air filters, choose electrostatic since these are washable. Their MERV ratings range from 2 to 10, and they can be cost-effective in the long run.

For MERV ratings above 16, look for HEPA filters. They are ideal for families with chronic respiratory diseases or severe allergies. Consult with your HVAC repair company regarding the compatibility of HEPA filters with your system.

Filter Size

Always check your current filter's measurements before buying a new one. If you can't access your old device or read the dimensions label on its edge, use a measuring tape to get the filter compartment's height, thickness, and depth.
