Along with packing, hiring a mover, and other duties, you’ll also need to consider your address change when moving. Here are some tips to ensure your change of address is squared away by the time you reach your new home.

3 Steps to Change Your Address When Moving

1. Contact the Post Office

Your local post office provides a convenient method for making address changes. Either stop by or visit them online to fill out a simple form.

Remember, mail will only be forwarded to your new address for 12 months, so you’ll have to notify others as well. During this period, your new address will be provided when mail is bounced back to senders, but after that, mail will be returned without your new address listed.

2. Create a List of Others to Contact

Make a list of all the people and companies that send you mail, which might include:

  • Your bank
  • Credit card companies
  • Utility providers
  • Insurance company
  • Internet/cell service provider
  • Department of motor vehicles
  • Voter registration office

Also, remember to write down any friends and family who might not be aware of your move.

3. Update Your Address Wherever It Appears

movingWhile the above tips ensure you continue to receive correspondence to your new home, your address is likely to appear in other places. If you have pets that wear collars, update the address on the tags. If you use stamps or stationery with your address listed on them, order new ones.
