People stop wearing certain items of clothing for a multitude of reasons. Clothes can no longer fit, run out of style, or go through general wear-and-tear. Before you throw used clothing in the dumpster, try another way to get rid of them. Donating them is better for the environment and helps out others in need. There are some uses for old clothes, but if you decide you no longer want an article of clothing, consider these tips before you throw it away.

Do:

Repurpose Your Old Clothes

You don’t have to throw away used clothes just yet; try repurposing them instead. Use old and stained t-shirts as rags for chores around the house. You can also create an outfit or two to wear when working on a messy home project, like building a deck or painting a room.

Donate Those Clothes

Don’t:

Throw It Away

Throwing away your old clothes is easy, but you might not realize the environmental impact it has. Throwing away used clothes usually means they’ll end up in a landfill where they can emit greenhouse gases.

Donate Clothes in Poor Condition

Donating used clothes both reduces your carbon footprint and serves as an act of charity, but don’t donate clothes that aren’t wearable. If donated clothes are too worn out, most thrift stores will just recycle them. It’s also important to talk with the thrift store you plan on donating to so you can understand their process.
