Your car is equipped with a computer that monitors various components. If it notices a problem, it will notify you of the issue by illuminating a dashboard light. Learn what these lights mean, so you know when to take your car to an auto mechanic.

3 Dashboard Warning Lights You Should Recognize

1. Check Engine

The check engine light features an engine that may say “CHECK” on it. This light can indicate many issues, ranging from a loose gas cap to a faulty spark plug. The easiest way to determine the problem is to have an auto mechanic hook your car up to a computer for a diagnostic test.

2. Battery

This may result from a faulty alternator not recharging the battery as it should. Your battery, terminals, or alternator parts may also need replacement.

Don’t ignore this light, or you may be left stranded with a dead battery and a car that can’t start.

3. Brake

The brake light will say “BRAKE” and look like a circle with an exclamation point in it. It will turn on when the emergency brake is engaged while you’re driving, so check that first.

If that isn’t the problem, then your brake pads may need to be replaced, or there may be another issue with the automatic braking system (ABS). Have your brake system checked out before it breaks down and puts you at risk of an accident.
