If your physician needs to get a view of your internal structures to make a diagnosis or rule out a condition, they may refer you for an ultrasound. While this type of imaging is commonly performed on pregnant women to track the health of growing babies, there are many other medical circumstances for which they’re used. Discover what to expect from the process by exploring the frequently asked questions below.

4 Common Ultrasound Questions

Why would I need one?

Physicians prescribe ultrasounds for many different reasons. These scans can help to identify issues with the soft tissue, including muscles, blood vessels, and organs. For example, they’re commonly used to look for issues in the kidneys, liver, and pancreas. However, they can also be used to check on the cardiovascular system, detect cysts or tumors, and diagnose issues such as carpal tunnel syndrome.

How should I prepare?

The type of preparation required for your ultrasound will depend on the reason you’re having it. If you’re having your liver or gallbladder examined, you may be asked to fast beforehand. An empty bladder may also be required to provide an unobstructed view of the internal structures. Your physician or ultrasound technician may provide additional instructions before you go.

What does the process entail?

physicianFor external ultrasounds, the technician will apply a lubricating gel on the skin and run a transducer over the body to capture the necessary images. Internal ultrasounds can also be performed, in which the transducer is inserted into the oral, rectal, or vaginal cavity to take images at the appropriate location in the body.

How does the technology work?

When an ultrasound is performed, the transducer sends sound waves throughout the body. It captures the waves that bounce back and transfers that data to a computer. Based on this data, the computer generates an image known as a sonogram, which your physician will then review and interpret to determine your results.
