How to Prepare for a Hike in Denali National Park, Healy, Alaska

If you’re planning a visit to Alaska, you’ll likely want to immerse yourself in the gorgeous natural scenery. Hiking in Denali National Park is one of the best ways to take in the state’s magnificent wildlife and landscapes. Stay safe and comfortable on your hike by using the following helpful tourism guide.

What to Wear

One of the most important items you’ll need for your Alaskan hike is a good pair of boots that are lightweight and have ankle support. Layering is also crucial for protection against the wet and chilly elements.

Wear a light wool layer to protect your skin along with insulating long underwear to stay warm. Wear a drip-dry shirt, pants, and outer jacket to keep from getting wet. Additionally, bring a hiking pole to help you keep your balance and cut through thick brush, and pack a first aid kit for minor injuries.

Protection Against Animals

tourismIf you encounter a bear or moose during your hike, you’ll need to be prepared. Make a moderate level of noise to scare bears away, and shoot pepper spray downwind if one approaches you. Moose usually leave you alone as long as you don’t bother them, but if one charges at you, run away and hide behind a sturdy obstacle.

Food & Water

You’ll need plenty of water for your hike, but you might not want to carry such a heavy load. The good news is that Alaskan streams are plentiful and most have crystal clear, drinkable water flowing through them. Bring an empty water bottle to refill as you explore the trails. Pack plenty of high-carb, high-protein snack bars to keep you nourished.
