The winter months in Hawaii tend to be rainy, and slippery roads create unsafe driving conditions. Over time, oil and grease accumulate on streets too and make navigating and braking more treacherous. There are several proactive steps you can take to prevent car accidents and keep others safe on the road during a storm.

How to Safely Drive in the Rain

1. Slow Down

Avoid driving at the speed limit when the roads are wet, especially on highways. Slowing down provides you with enough time to safely brake and avoid colliding with another vehicle. Continue to maintain ample distance between cars to compensate for the reduced visibility.

Driving slowly is also necessary to avoid hydroplaning. This dangerous condition occurs when a vehicle’s tires come in contact with water, causing a loss of traction. Drivers may lose control of braking and steering. If you begin to hydroplane, slowly take your foot off the gas pedal and keep the steering wheel straight—avoid slamming on the brakes to prevent skidding.

2. Maintain Your Car

Your tires should have adequate tread for safe traction on wet roads. To check for tire tread, place a penny upside down in the groove. If you can see Lincoln’s head, the tires need replacement. Lastly, have a mechanic check the brake pads and rotors every time you change the oil or every 10,000 miles.

3. Stay Focused

Distracted driving is dangerous no matter what the road conditions are, but rainfall can create a more severe car accident. Never text or talk on the phone while behind the wheel. Avoid fumbling with the radio, eating, drinking, or doing any activity that takes your focus away from driving.
