Moving to a new home is no easy task. There are several matters to handle before the big day, and preparing and working with movers helps ensure a stress-free experience so you can settle into your new home right away. Here are a few tasks to take care of before the transition.

How to Get Ready for Your Upcoming Move

1. Create a Budget

Start creating a moving budget as soon as you know you’ll be relocating. Begin with the basics by researching short- or long-distance movers in the area. Most will provide an estimate based on how much you’re moving and the distance. These don’t always include the price of boxes and other supplies, however. You may also want to look into short-term storage units to tuck away extra items.

Next, consider transit expenses, including gas and oil changes, hotel stays, and dining and snacking while you’re on the road. Finally, look into home-cleaning services after you move and any costs related to turning off utilities.

2. Change Your Mailing Address

To ensure no mail is sent to your old home after you move, schedule a mailing address change with USPS. Do this online or in-person at the post office at least a week before your moving date.

Make changes with accounts and service providers, as well. These include banking, credit, and retirement fund managers; health care facilities; the IRS and tax agencies; online retail and delivery services; and insurance providers.

3. Schedule Movers

Nothing can replace the convenience of movers, so schedule a local company. Many are booked well in advance, so connect with one weeks or months ahead of time. They’ll arrive on the moving date, load everything, and ensure it’s moved safely to your new home on time.

4. Purchase Moving Supplies

moversIf moving supplies aren’t included in your rate with the moving company, pick up essentials like tape, furniture blankets, boxes, and bubble wrap.

A 400-square-foot to 700-square-foot space often requires seven small boxes, nine medium boxes, six large boxes, and three extra-large boxes. A 1,700-square-foot to 2,200-square-foot space requires roughly 38 small boxes, 36 medium boxes, 21 large boxes, and 13 extra-large boxes.

5. Schedule Utilities & Services at Your New Home

Let utility providers know they’ll need to transfer service to your new home on your moving date. This should include internet, cable, gas, water, electricity, and waste disposal. Tell your home insurance provider, as well, so you have immediate coverage.
