Record players deliver a classic musical sound unlike any other. Learn how to care for your delicate system to avoid scratched records and distorted sound. You can keep your turntable spinning for years to come with adequate maintenance. This guide will outline some key components of turntable care.

Do:

Align the cartridge.

Your record player will sound great when the needle fits perfectly in the grooves of the records. Any misalignment can throw off this balance and lower the quality of the sound. If you’re checking alignment at home, use a protractor to set the cartridge between two points. The cartridge may have come with a protractor, or you can buy one from a record store. Keep in mind that this process can be tricky, so you might want to bring your turntable to a record shop for adjustment.

Replace parts when needed.

turntableYour system might not sound like it used to, but this doesn’t mean you need to buy a new one. Often, replacing a part or two will do the trick. For example, you should replace the belt if your records won’t spin. Replacing an old stylus can also make the music sound more clear. Cartridges are typically good for 1,200 hours of play.

Don’t:

Let dust pile up.

As with most household items, your turntable will collect dust over time. Unfortunately, this dust collecting around the stylus can cause distorted sound or skipping. Be sure to dust off your record player regularly with a microfiber cloth. Avoid using your fingers to clean the stylus, since you could accidentally bend it. Remember to cover the record player with a dust cover between uses to prevent buildup on fragile components. Alison’s Record Shop sells a stylus and record cleaning brush to help with the maintenance. Also don’t forget to dust your record off each time you play it.

Keep the turntable on a wobbly surface.

Turntables are sensitive to vibration. As the stylus moves along the grooves of the record, it produces an electrical current. People walking by, excited pets, and even loud noises can disrupt this current and cause distortion. To be safe, keep your record player on a sturdy, even surface.
