When babies are old enough to start exploring, everything immediately becomes a hazard, especially electricals. Since 2015, National Electrical Code has mandated that all new homes built in the United States must have tamper-resistant electrical sockets installed. If your home is older than that, you should speak to an electrician about replacing the outlets. Here’s everything you need to put precautionary measures in place to minimize any risk to your child.

How to Babyproof Electrical Items

1. When a Socket Is in Use

When you’re using an electrical socket, there’s nothing to stop little fingers from meddling. The most effective solution is to place furniture in front of it. It doesn’t need to be heavy, but you need something that both blocks the outlet from view and is too difficult for a toddler to push out the way.

A beanbag, small table, or storage chest will work because they’re easy for an adult to move but impossible for children. Wheeled furniture is also ideal; it’s mobile but can be locked in place when you don’t need it to be.

2. When a Socket Is Not in Use

electrician Outlet caps and sliding plate covers are both popular solutions for blocking outlets. The caps are small, plastic “plugs” that have no purpose other than to block outlet holes. Savvy toddlers have been known to quickly work out how to remove these caps, so they’re more suitable for younger children.

Sliding plate covers are better at keeping hands of all ages away. They have small sliding doors on a spring mechanism that are held open by the appliance plug itself. When you remove it, the doors automatically close. If you don’t have the time, ask an electrician to install these.

3. Managing Wires

When your baby starts crawling, they may take an interest in loose wires and electrical cords. Keep these out of your child’s way by securing them with Gaffer’s Tape. Children can’t pry this up, and you can buy no-mark variants that are safe to use on the furniture and walls.
