Moving to a new home is exciting, but without proper planning, you may be scrambling to get everything done. Allow yourself plenty of time to pack and do so carefully so you can ensure safe transport by your moving company. Follow the tips below to make the packing process go smoothly.

How to Pack Moving Boxes

1. Choose a Variety of Box Sizes

The number of boxes you need will depend on the size of your home and the number of people in the family. You can find moving calculators online, but make sure there is a mix of small, medium, and large boxes.

Use the small boxes for heavier items such as books, canned food, and dishes. Pack linens, blankets, and other lightweight items in large boxes. Medium boxes are for everything else—electronics, pots and pans, toys, and decorative items.

Since clothes can be heavy, purchase wardrobe boxes, which also keep your items neatly hung and make unpacking simpler.

2. Label the Boxes

Purchase colored dot stickers or tape so you can color code the boxes by room. This tells your moving company where to put everything in your new place.

3. Avoid Breakage

If you don’t pack a box properly, the heavy items inside can break in transit or fall through the bottom. Boxes with heavy items should have three layers of packing tape along the bottom of the box. Build a strong foundation with padding on the bottom, such as a bath towel or bubble wrap.

Place the heaviest items on the bottom. Once you’re finished putting items in the box, lay down another layer of protection so things cannot move around.
