If you live in the chilly winter climate of Upstate New York, you've definitely had to remove snow and ice from your auto glass before. However, when this task is so frequently necessary, many people hurry through the process and accidentally scratch their paint or chip their windows. To clean your car safely, follow these tips.

How to Remove Ice & Snow From Your Auto Glass

1. Eliminate Snow Completely

Many people are in a hurry when cleaning their cars, so they only scrape a small patch across their windshield that lets them see out. However, while this may save time, it's very dangerous. To stay safe, remove all the snow from all your windows so you can see clearly. Also, clear snow from the roof, hood, trunk, lights, and license plate to avoid a ticket.

2. Avoid Salt or Hot Water

However, hot water could cause the cold glass to crack, and salt will eat through your paint and lead to corrosion. Instead, use patience and a snow brush with an attached ice scraper.

3. Warm Up Your Car

Start your car and turn on the heaters and defrosters before starting snow removal. A warm vehicle will do some of the work for you, melting the ice from the inside. However, if the snow is deep, make sure it isn't blocking your exhaust pipe as the car is warming to avoid the accumulation of dangerous fumes, including carbon monoxide.
