Vinyl siding fades over time due to exposure from sunlight, rain, and harsh weather. Mold, mildew, and airborne particles from trees can make vinyl dirty or cause it to lose its luster. If you want to improve your home’s curb appeal, apply these techniques to your vinyl siding.

How to Make Old Vinyl New Again

1. Clean

Scrub your siding with a water and vinegar mix consisting of three parts vinegar and seven parts water (to dilute the harshness of the vinegar). Use a sponge to scrub the dirt, dust, or mildew. If the dirt is stubborn, use laundry detergent instead of vinegar and maintain the same ratio of ingredients. Rinse with water using a low-pressure garden sprayer.

2. Paint

If cleaning and shining aren’t enough to revitalize the look of your vinyl siding, apply a layer of primer and two coats of latex urethane exterior paint. These products contain ingredients that will adhere to the vinyl and expand and contract with the surface when the temperature fluctuates. Don’t use interior paint, as interior paint isn’t meant to sustained rain or extended exposure to the elements.

3. Replace

If your vinyl siding is damaged or stained beyond repair, replace them with new pieces through the exterior of your home. Since your new siding won’t match the sun-soaked older ones, paint the new additions so they blend in with the rest of the house.
