No matter the size of your household, everyone recognizes plungers as irreplaceable plumbing supplies.  Home repair novices and experts keep plungers on hand to handle messy situations because of their unique ability to get rid of tough clogs. Every tool, however, isn’t created the same. Here are three common plunger types for clearing pipes and drains.

3 Different Types of Plungers

1. Flange Plunger

Designed for toilet plunging, this tool has a suction cup with an additional narrow rubber opening, or flange, that fits the curved opening in toilet bowls. The ability to tuck the rubber flange deep into the bowl makes this plumbing supply tool essential for bathroom maintenance. Never use your bathroom flange plunger in the kitchen sink for obvious hygienic reasons.

2. Cup Plunger

This tried-and-true plumbing tool is useful for clearing clogs in tubs, showers, sinks, and toilets. Because it’s more effective on flat surfaces, it’s not always recommended for toilets. It will, however, do the job if you angle it into the right position.

3. Bellows Plunger

The accordion, or bellows, plunger provides maximum suction power when clearing stubborn clogs. It has plastic or rubber pleats with a smaller flange at the end. Although adept at clearing toilets, some find it harder to maneuver and control. Unlike standard cup plungers, the accordion design can be used on any surface when approaching a pipe or drain at an angle.
