Your vehicle’s suspension not only provides you with a comfortable ride, but it also protects other components of the car from damage. Your ability to recognize a developing problem will ensure you can get suspension work done at the first sign of a problem. This overview will help you identify those signs early.

What Are the Signs Your Vehicle Needs Suspension Work?

1. Pulling to One Side

If you let go of the steering wheel as you drive on a straight section of road and the vehicle veers to one side, this indicates an alignment problem. However, there may be a problem with the tires, so check if the tread is even on both front tires: Place a penny upside down in the tread groove. If you can see the top of Lincoln’s head, replace the tire.

Next, verify that the tires are inflated to the proper level. If the vehicle is still pulling, you may need suspension work.

2. A Bumpy Ride

In either case, consult an auto mechanic at the first sign of a problem.

3. The Front End Dips at Stops

Pay attention to how your car reacts to stops, especially sudden stops. If the front end of the vehicle dips or leans forward in a “nose dive,” the shocks are probably worn down. Head to a mechanic as soon as possible because allowing the issue to worsen could affect your ability to stop in an emergency.

4. Difficulty Driving

Although a little more subtle than the other signs, a change in the quality of the ride can be the first sign that there’s a suspension problem. The ride may be bumpier, rougher, or a harder experience. You may also notice the car pulling as you turn a corner, which could be dangerous because the car may roll over.
