If your property has a septic system, landscaping can pose some challenges. For example, to prevent costly septic repairs, you must avoid disrupting the pipes and distribution boxes. Here are a few practical tips to help you keep your septic system intact without sacrificing curb appeal.

How to Protect Your Septic System When Landscaping

1. Locate the Drain Field

If you’re not entirely sure where the system’s drain field is located, call in a professional to confirm its borders. The drain field uses a series of perforated pipes to eliminate bacteria from the waste that flows through the system so the water that remains can reenter the water table. Also known as a leach field, this is the most expensive component of a septic system. It's also the most inconspicuous element, since it usually isn’t marked with visible boundaries.

2. Avoid Excessive Use of Stones or Mulchseptic repairs

It may be tempting to fill your yard with gravel or mulch because these materials are low maintenance. However, there needs to be some grass or flora on your property if you have a drain field. Grass or other plants will prevent soil erosion while facilitating the exchange of oxygen, letting the effluent break down more quickly. A layer of stones or mulch, on the other hand, will starve the underlying soil without holding it in place, so it will thin out over time.

3. Opt for Plants With Shorter Roots

If you have a relatively large lawn, you may be able to plant trees around the perimeter without disrupting the drain field. However, remember that tree roots can reach considerable lengths, and you’ll have to make costly septic repairs if they snake around any of the piping. As such, only use plants with relatively short roots near the drain field. In addition to grass, examples include azalea shrubs, spring bulbs, and wild violets. If any of your plants require irrigation, make sure to divert the sprinklers so all water stays at least 10 feet from the drain field to prevent oversaturation.
