Consisting of titanium screws, abutments, and crowns, dental implants provide the only permanent restorative dentistry solution. They look, feel, and function like real teeth so you can smile confidently and enjoy eating and talking normally. If you are considering dental implant surgery for broken, worn, or missing teeth, learn what you can expect from the procedure.

Preparation

To determine your candidacy, your dentist will take X-rays of your mouth to ensure your gums and bones are healthy enough for titanium implants. If you are a candidate, the dentist will then take impressions of your mouth using metal or plastic trays.

implantsYou will also discuss sedation options: nitrous oxide, oral, or IV. If you opt for IV, you cannot consume anything starting at 12:00 a.m. the night before your procedure. Otherwise, you can eat a normal breakfast.

Surgery prep may also include rinsing with an antibacterial mouthwash and taking antibiotics to prevent infection.

Surgery

The implant procedure is conducted in several phases. Once damaged teeth are removed, if applicable, you may undergo bone grafting to ensure your jaw can accommodate the titanium screw.

After you have healed, the next appointment will involve inserting the implant. The dentist will drill holes into the jaw for titanium screw placement. The jawbone fuses with the screws, which typically takes six to 12 weeks and requires a soft food diet to prevent injuries. Gum tissue will also close over the implants during this time.

Lastly, the dentist will make small incisions in the gums to screw abutments into the titanium that attach to dental caps, or crowns. The crowns are the same color as your real teeth.

Aftercare

Your dentist will provide aftercare instructions during each phase of the implant process, such as what you can and cannot eat and how to alleviate swelling. Once the procedure is complete, take care of your new teeth with daily brushing and flossing and see your dentist every six months for cleanings and checkups.

Contact your dentist if you experience any issues, such as infections around the affected bone and gums.
