Ice dams are large chunks of ice that form at the front of a roof and in its gutters. They act as a dam, stopping melting snow from draining away from the house, and can cause considerable damage. There are several culprits and a few solutions to this winter challenge.

How They Form

Ice dams begin when snow collects on a roof. A lack of attic insulation allows heat from the house to leak through, melting the snow. The popularity of recessed lighting, coupled with poor ceiling insulation, also result in melting snow. The cold temperatures refreeze the resulting water in the gutters, stopping the flow, and forming substantial chunks of ice.

guttersThe Dangers of Ice Dams

The ice can put so much weight on your gutters and roof that they can break off and damage the exterior of your home. A lack of a membrane at the front of the roof only adds to the problem because the water can leak inside, ruining flooring and contributing to mold and mildew growth.

How to Prevent Ice Dams

Roofing

If you already have water damage to your roof from ice dams or another reason, upgrading to a metal roof helps prevent the problem in the future. This is because the melting snow cannot seep through the metal.

Insulation

Install thicker insulation in the attic, with a vapor barrier between the ceiling and insulation to keep any moisture out of this area. This also keeps the home at a more consistent temperature throughout the year.

Gutter Systems

Upgrading the gutters around your home is the best way to prevent ice dams. Homeowners often use heat cables that run along with the metal, preventing ice from forming. Additionally, you can use a hose to run warm water through your gutters, creating a channel.
