Funeral caskets come in numerous styles and materials to suit aesthetic and budget preferences. And while cremation and biodegradable caskets are available, most people considering traditional burials choose between metal and wooden products. Learn more about these options to determine what’s right for your funeral planning needs.

What to Know About Metal & Wooden Caskets

Wood

Solid wood caskets come in several hardwoods such as poplar, maple, mahogany, oak, cherry, pine, willow, and walnut. Many are built by hand and feature sheens from assorted finishes. Price varies according to wood species, as harder woods such as cherry and walnut cost more than softwoods such as willow and pine. Wooden products can also feature brass plaques and other decorative hardware.

Metal Varieties

casketsCaskets also come in a few metal options, including copper, stainless steel, carbon steel, and bronze. Metal is more durable than wood and typically features rubber gasket seals that keep dirt, moisture, and other elements from entering. Bronze and copper feature the highest price tags but offer timeless elegance and durability.

Stainless and carbon steel provide economic value compared to bronze and copper; however, they do not last as long. And while the price of copper and bronze goes by weight per square foot, carbon and stainless steel use gauge thickness to determine the cost. The lower the gauge, the thicker the metal, and most steel versions come in 18 and 20-gauge selections.
