From garments and handbags to charming wall art, cross-stitching can breathe new life into your wardrobe and home. But what does this embroidery method entail, and how hard is it to learn?  It can be challenging by hand, but using a Pfaff or Husqvarna Viking sewing machine with built-in cross-stitches, can make the process easier and faster.  If you’re willing to try this art form by hand, use the following guide to get started.

An Introduction to Cross Stitching

A cross stitch is appropriately named, as it features two perpendicular diagonal lines, which form an “X” or a cross. However, there are two ways to go about completing your cross stitch project: the English or Danish method. The English methods involve making both diagonal stitches consecutively, completing the cross stitch before moving onto the next. For the Danish method, you’ll complete half of each cross stitch (one diagonal line), then turn around and finish the top half of each stitch. For the evenest results, you’ll want to make all your first or bottom diagonals slant the same way.

How to Get Started

embroidery Kalispell, MTFirst, you’ll need to prepare your needle and thread, or “embroidery floss.” Start by cutting a piece of floss around 12 to 18 inches in length. If you leave it too long, it might form knots as you go. Then, separate two strands (out of the six strands twisted together), one at a time. Using a round-end tapestry needle, thread the two strands into the needle, but don’t knot it as you might when mending a garment.

Now, you’re ready to start cross stitching! First, practice by forming a few rows of those X’s in the English or Danish style. Once you feel comfortable with your chosen method, you can move onto cross-stitching patterns. This will show the colors you need to use and where you need to stitch them, printed onto the fabric in the embroidery hoop. Like a paint-by-number, you need to follow the pattern to complete a picture-perfect design.
