As winter sets in, your car might have to deal with issues brought on by cold weather and harsh conditions. To avoid being left out in the cold, consider some of the problems you may encounter and how you can prevent the need for auto repairs this season.

What Problems Could Your Car Face During Winter?

1. Malfunctioning Windshield Wipers

Moisture between windshield wipers and the glass can cause the wipers to freeze. This leaves you with no way to clear your windshield when snow or sleet coats the surface and hinders visibility. Don’t try to pull the wipers manually or turn them on, as this can damage the wiper motor. Instead, spray defrosting liquid around them and use your car’s front and rear defroster to speed up the thawing process.

2. Low Tire Pressure

While warm air makes gases expand, cold air causes them to contract. Even if your tires don’t leak, severe weather could reduce their air pressure inside of them. Low air pressure makes them more prone to punctures and can lower the fuel economy of your car. Check your car’s owner’s manual for the recommended tire pressure and regularly fill up your tires to keep them at that level.

3. Dead Battery

The best way to stop it from going dead in the winter is to start your vehicle at least once a day, even if you don’t plan on going out. Letting it run for a minute allows the battery to maintain a charge and keeps interior components from freezing.

4. Frozen Fuel Line

When your car gets low on gas, there’s more room for condensation to form and then freeze, preventing gas from getting to your engine. The more gas you have, the less likely this is to happen. Always keep your gas levels above a quarter of a tank during the winter to prevent your engine from stalling.

5. Cracked Belt

As your alternator belt becomes cold, it is more prone to cracking. Once this happens, it can no longer help move the engine components to power your vehicle’s movement. Worn down belts are more likely to break, so consider a replacement before it gets too cold.
