Whether you’re remodeling your home or planning a new construction, siding is among the most important components. Naturally, you want to make the best choice, but it’s not always immediately obvious what that means for your home. By learning about the benefits and drawbacks of the various materials typically used for siding, you may come closer to making a decision with which you’re comfortable.

5 Siding Materials Pros & Cons

1. Hardboard

Because it’s made from combining pieces or particles of recycled wood together, hardboard is both eco-friendly and flexible. That is, you have more choice in the appearance and length of the boards while taking better care of the environment, often for a modest price. However, it’s not particularly durable and rots easily after absorbing water, so it requires frequent repaints and caulking.

2. Vinyl

sidingResistant to damage and capable of being manufactured in a variety of styles and colors, it’s easy to make vinyl siding fit the style of any house without requiring much maintenance, if any. It’s not alterable once created, though, and it becomes discolored over time. Since it’s primarily made from petroleum, it’s not ideal for the environment, either.

3. Steel

There’s a reason why steel siding is popular for commercial buildings, and that’s because it’s low maintenance, highly durable, and offers excellent insulation — all of which saves money on upkeep and energy. It can also be fashioned from recycled steel, making it eco-friendly. Unfortunately, it insulates heat so well that it’s not ideal for hot climates, and it’s prone to corrosion in wet or coastal areas.

4. Aluminum

Like steel, aluminum siding offers superior insulation, guaranteeing energy efficiency. It also demands very little upkeep. It’s durable and highly resistant to fire, pests, and even rust. However, despite its artistic versatility, its metal appearance doesn’t always feel homey or cozy, and it’s vulnerable to scratches and dents.

5. Cedar

Cedar siding is easy to adapt to any home style, and it looks gorgeous while providing decent insulation. Additionally, it’s far less vulnerable to water damage and insect infestations than other types of wood, and it’s a smart choice for the environment. The main drawback is that it’s easily flammable and requires consistent maintenance so it remains rot- and insect-free.
