While many motorists understand the importance of regular oil changes, your automobile also relies on other critical fluids for safe, reliable operation. Here’s a quick primer on proper fluid maintenance before your next scheduled service.

What Fluids Are Vital for Your Car’s Performance?

1. Oil

Your engine is a complex mechanism with countless moving parts. Oil is its life’s blood, lubricating components to prevent damage due to friction. When your oil becomes dirty or too low, the motor must work harder. Over time, you risk engine damage or even complete failure. That’s why experts recommend checking oil levels monthly and having it changed every 3,000 to 5,000 miles.

2. Coolant

Coolant removes heat from the system through absorption and then dissipates it through the radiator. When this familiar, fluorescent-colored fluid gets low or dirty, it loses its ability to absorb heat. That puts your engine at risk for damage, so check your coolant monthly and replace it every two to three years.

3. Brake Fluid

Every time you press the brake pedal, fluid moves through brake lines to compress calipers or cylinders that slow your wheels. Low or contaminated brake fluid can be extremely hazardous, compromising your car’s stopping ability. Although most vehicles contain brake fluid in a closed system, levels should be checked whenever you have a routine oil change. Brake fluid should be completely replaced every two years.

4. Power Steering Fluid

Many modern cars have electric steering systems, eliminating the need for power steering fluid. But with countless older vehicles on the road,  it’s important to know whether your car is equipped with a hydraulic steering system that must be maintained for safety. Low fluid levels can cause a loss of steering control or even a complete failure, so have it checked during all regular maintenance.

5. Transmission Fluid

This critical fluid keeps the precision parts inside your transmission functioning smoothly while guarding against damage. Like your brake and steering systems, the transmission is a closed system so it should not require topping off. However, it may become contaminated over time, so have it checked at every oil change and replaced every 50,000 to 100,000 miles based on manufacturer’s recommendations.
