When you schedule an HVAC installation, certain preparations are necessary before the contractor and equipment arrive. Taking the needed steps will ensure that you get the full benefit of your investment. Here’s what you need to know as a homeowner.

Do:

Choose the right size.

If your system is too small or large, it won’t run efficiently or deliver the warmth or coolness you need. An experienced HVAC contractor will make the load calculations to ensure that you select the right size for your home, saving you energy and money. They will also measure the square footage, determine the BTU, and take high ceilings into consideration.

Clear the area.

Before the HVAC installation begins, clear items that might interfere with their work. Do a cleanup outside and inside to remove leaves, dust, furniture, and clutter. After the work is complete, remove any remaining debris.

Don’t:

Let pets roam.

If you have pets, secure them in cages or animal carriers and remove them from the home and yard until the work is finished. You can also drop them off by a friend or family member.

Your pets may be disturbed by the unfamiliar noises, and the workers need to be protected from possible harm while working throughout the home. A barking dog could scare or shock them, creating a dangerous situation.

Leave valuable or fragile items out.

Even if you have homeowners insurance and your HVAC professionals are bonded and insured, move valuable or fragile items, such as jewelry or computers, out of harm’s way yourself. Most contractors prefer not to handle their customer’s belongings to reduce their risks of being liable for injury or damage.
