According to the CDC, approximately 1 in 59 children is diagnosed with an autism spectrum disorder (ASD), which can lead to problems with socialization, communication, and interpersonal relationships. It’s important for parents to understand these disorders so they can get the proper treatment for their child. With the right treatment, people with special needs will lead rich and fulfilling lives. Here’s what you need to know as a parent.

The Terminology Used for Autism Disorders

The terminology used in regards to autism can be confusing. Here are some of the more common terms:

  • Asperger’s Syndrome: People with Asperger’s syndrome are considered to be high-functioning. That means symptoms remain relatively mild, and most people with this disorder are still able to care for themselves and hold gainful employment.
  • Pervasive Developmental Disorder (PDD)/Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD): PDD is another term for autism spectrum disorders, and it’s becoming more commonly used. Developmental issues associated with PDD/ASD can range from mild to severe.
  • Pervasive Developmental Disorder, Not Otherwise Specified (PDD-NOS)/Social Communication Disorder (SCD): Some people have certain symptoms of autism but lack others, which leads to a non-specific diagnosis. Children with PDD-NOS/SCD can also experience symptoms that range in severity.

Signs & Symptoms

Repetition may also be seen in movement and behaviors, along with general clumsiness, obsessional attachments to objects, and sensory disruptions. Finally, kids with autism often experience problems forging friendships and are often unable to express interest in other people.

What Parents Can Do

Parents can help their children deal with the signs and symptoms of autism. First and foremost, have your child assessed by a doctor familiar with autism and kids with special needs.

Many kids with autism prefer a structured environment, so strive for consistency in your home. If you don’t have the time or energy to care for your son or daughter, hire a home health care service to help. When choosing one, make sure they specialize in children with special needs.
