Braces are a long-term investment and one of the best ways to straighten a smile. Like all cosmetic tools, they require diligent care. Damaging them can result in injury and set back your recovery time. Use the following tips and work with a dentist to keep them clean and intact.

How to Protect Your Oral Health & Braces

1. Brush, Floss & Rinse

It’s easy for food particles to become trapped in your braces, so brush, floss, and rinse your mouth at least twice a day. When left, they can promote decay and weaken the brace’s structure. Cavities and other issues can also get in the way of treatment. If flossing is cumbersome, invest in a braces cleaner, dental picks, or water-jet flossers. Make sure you schedule your two trips to the dentist each year, too.

2. Wear a Mouthguard

dentistIf you play sports, it’s important to wear a mouthguard. Oral trauma can break the braces and your teeth. Broken wires can lacerate your gums or stab into your cheek. Ask your dentist about a custom mouthguard. These are designed to fit perfectly over your teeth and braces, providing the defense that store-bought and at-home alternatives can’t match.

3. Watch What You Eat

The wrong foods can create serious problems. Hard foods like thick chips, nuts, popcorn shells, and pretzels may dislodge brackets or bend wiring. Sticky candies and caramels can also draw brackets loose and are difficult to clean from the hardware. Make sure you avoid chewing ice or inedible objects. These can damage both your tooth enamel and the braces, often requiring you to get cosmetic care to restore your smile.
