Mold in an HVAC unit presents a health and safety risk to anyone inside the home. Whenever the cooling or heating system is turned on, it pushes mold spores through vents and into the air. This tainted air is then easily breathed in, where it can produce a range of distressing symptoms, from mild congestion to serious respiratory distress. In some cases, mold will also have a distinct smell that can spread throughout the home. Below, learn more about the causes of mold and how to remove it from your cooling or heating system.

Causes

HVAC units and air ducts are an ideal breeding ground for mold. The combination of moisture, warmth, and darkness is essential for mold to thrive. Water vapor can develop in HVAC systems and ducts as cold air passes through. Normally, this vapor evaporates, but when higher humidity levels are present, the vapor turns into condensation. Then, as the cooling or heating system is utilized, it circulates other particles like dust, pet dander, and pollen, which eventually settle in the condensation buildup and provide the necessary nutrients for mold to grow. As the system continues to be utilized, the mold will only gain more sustenance and continue to spread.

Removal

heating systemTo remove mold from an HVAC system, mix one tablespoon of detergent with a half-cup of baking soda and one cup of water. Wearing a mask, rubber gloves, and old clothes, apply this solution to the mold growth, let it sit for several minutes, and scrub it off. Wipe up any remaining solution with paper towels. When you're done, throw all sponges, paper towels, and rags into the trash. Then, double-bag it and secure the bag tightly shut. Remember that mold is a toxic substance and needs to be removed with great care and caution. If you're uncomfortable removing it yourself or have never removed mold before, be sure to hire a professional mold removal service.
