A pulsing toothache can leave you in constant discomfort, so see your dentist to receive a diagnosis and treatment plan. In the meantime, there are a number of dentist-approved remedies you can use at home to alleviate the pain.

3 Ways to Soothe a Toothache at Home

1. Rinse With Saltwater

Saltwater will not only dislodge stuck food and irritating particles around cavities but also reduce swelling and inflammation.

Add one teaspoon of salt into a glass of warm water. Swish the mixture in your mouth for 30 seconds, then spit it out. You can continue doing this leading up to your dentist visit.

You can also try hydrogen peroxide as an antibacterial rinse. Mix 3% hydrogen peroxide with water, and swish it for 30 seconds. Take care not to swallow it.

2. Apply Garlic

dentist-anchorageGarlic has long been used as a remedy for pain. It contains the flavonoid quercetin that naturally combats inflammation. Garlic can also kill decay-causing bacteria.

Crush one clove of garlic into a paste, then rub it onto the affected tooth and surrounding gums. You can also chew the raw garlic.

3. Apply a Cold Compress

Reduce swelling and inflammation by applying a cold compress to your cheek. As the blood vessels in the area constrict, you’ll experience less pain. Apply and remove it in 20-minute intervals.

You can also place a piece of ice in your mouth near the tooth. But don’t chew it—you may damage your tooth or cause further pain.
