Prescription glasses correct vision issues and help you navigate the world safely and with confidence. To ensure they serve you well for the months and years ahead, it’s essential to properly clean eyeglasses on a routine basis. Whether you’re sporting your very first or your tenth pair, here are some fundamental tips to assist you in keeping them clean.

Cleaning Tips for Prescription Glasses

1. Wash & Dry Lenses

Every morning, give your lenses a rinse under lukewarm water. Place a small drop of mild, lotion-free dishwashing detergent on each lens and lightly rub it around the expanse of each, being sure to get into the corners and around the perimeters. Then rinse the lenses again under lukewarm water, removing all traces of soap, and shake them off. Dry the lenses with a clean, lint-free cloth.

2. Don't Neglect the Frames

Dishwashing detergent and lukewarm water can be utilized on frames as well—just be sure to use your fingers and clean all those hard-to-reach spots, like over the bridge, around the hinges, and in the end pieces. For stubborn buildup, a little rubbing alcohol on a soft cloth is often effective.

3. Take Wipes With You

Keep a few lens cleaning wipes with you in your purse or wallet. These are ideal for on-the-go cleaning when you don't have ready access to a sink, soap, or soft cloth. Having wipes on hand will also reduce the temptation to clean glasses with saliva or a shirttail, which should be avoided at all costs. Saliva is not hygienic and smears bacteria on your glasses, while clothing can have harsh fibers that scratch the lenses.
